How to Include Your Pets in Your Relaxation and Self-Care Time

Self-care doesn't always have to mean escaping from everyone and everything.

For pet parents, sometimes the best way to relax is to include the little creatures who make home feel like home.

Your pet can become part of your relaxation routine in simple, everyday ways — whether that's cuddling on the couch, taking a slow walk together, or simply sitting beside each other while you unwind.

Of course, every pet is different. Some want to be involved in absolutely everything you do. Others prefer to supervise from across the room.

Either way, there are plenty of ways to make your pets part of your self-care time.

Start With a Cozy Cuddle

Sometimes you don't need a complicated activity.

You just need your pet.

Grab a blanket, find a comfortable spot, and let your pet join you if they enjoy cuddling.

Turn on your favorite comfort show, listen to some music, read a book, or simply sit quietly.

Give yourself permission to enjoy the moment without needing to accomplish anything.

Sometimes having a warm, furry friend beside you makes it easier to slow down.

Take a Relaxing Walk Together

Walking your dog doesn't have to be another chore on the list.

When you aren't rushing, it can become part of your own self-care.

Instead of focusing on getting a certain number of steps or completing the walk as quickly as possible, slow down.

Notice the weather.

Look at the trees.

Listen to the birds.

Let your dog stop and sniff.

Take a few deep breaths.

A walk can be good for both of you — and you don't have to turn it into a workout.

What About Cats?

Indoor cats can have their own version of a little adventure.

Try sitting near an open screened window, creating a cozy window perch, or spending a few minutes playing with their favorite toy.

Your cat may not be interested in joining you for a neighborhood stroll, but they're perfectly capable of helping you slow down from the comfort of home.

Have a Pet-Friendly Movie Night

Sometimes self-care means doing absolutely nothing productive.

Pick a comfort movie or television show.

Get your favorite blanket.

Grab a snack.

Let your pet claim their usual spot beside you.

Maybe your dog watches the movie.

Maybe your cat sleeps through the entire thing.

Honestly, they're still excellent company.

The point isn't what you're watching.

It's creating a little space in your day where you aren't constantly thinking about what needs to happen next.

Read With Your Pet

Reading can be a wonderful way to slow your brain down.

And your pet can be part of it.

Curl up somewhere comfortable and read while your pet rests beside you.

Even if they aren't interested in the book, they're still providing some very important moral support.

For some pets, this might become a routine they recognize:

Human sits down with book = it's time to relax.

Try Gentle Grooming

Grooming can be relaxing for both you and your pet when they enjoy it.

Brush your dog or cat while sitting somewhere comfortable.

Take your time.

Make it less about getting the task finished and more about spending quiet time together.

Just remember that grooming should always be appropriate for your pet and something they are comfortable with.

If they start showing signs that they want to stop, let them.

Self-care should feel good for everyone involved.

Have a Little Play Session

Relaxation doesn't always mean being completely still.

Sometimes play is exactly what you need.

Grab your pet's favorite toy and spend a few minutes playing together.

For dogs, this might mean a game of fetch or tug.

For cats, it could be chasing a wand toy.

Play can give you a mental break while giving your pet attention and enrichment.

And let's be honest — watching a cat completely lose their mind over a toy can be pretty entertaining.

Create a Cozy Evening Routine

Your pet can become part of your nighttime wind-down routine.

For example:

  • Turn down the lights.

  • Put your phone away for a little while.

  • Make yourself a cozy drink.

  • Put on comfortable clothes.

  • Give your pet some attention.

  • Read, journal, or listen to calming music.

  • Spend a few quiet minutes together.

Your pet doesn't have to participate in every part of the routine.

Simply having them nearby can make the evening feel more comforting.

Practice Mindfulness With Your Pet

You don't need a meditation cushion and an hour of silence to practice mindfulness.

Try sitting with your pet for a few minutes and focusing on what's happening right now.

Notice:

  • The feeling of their fur.

  • The sound of their breathing.

  • Their purring or happy little noises.

  • The warmth of their body beside you.

  • The feeling of your feet on the floor.

  • The sounds around you.

When your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to the moment.

Your pet may even wonder why you're staring at them.

That's okay.

They're probably used to being stared at.

Have a "Do Nothing" Day Together

One of the hardest parts of self-care can be giving yourself permission to do nothing.

So try it.

Have a lazy morning with your pet.

Stay in your pajamas a little longer.

Watch television.

Take a nap.

Read.

Cuddle.

Play when you feel like playing.

Go outside when you feel like going outside.

Not every day needs to be productive.

Sometimes your body and mind need a slower day.

And your pet is probably going to be completely supportive of this plan.

Especially if it involves naps.

Remember: Your Pet Doesn't Have to Be Involved in Everything

Including your pet in self-care doesn't mean every relaxing activity has to become a pet activity.

Sometimes you need time alone.

That's okay.

Your pet can have their own cozy space while you have yours.

You can take a bath while they nap outside the bathroom.

You can journal while they sleep beside you.

You can watch a show while they curl up in their bed.

Self-care can include connection and personal space.

Both are important.

Let Your Pet Help You Slow Down

One of the beautiful things about living with animals is that they can remind us to notice the little things.

A sunny spot on the floor.

A warm blanket.

A favorite toy.

A quiet afternoon.

A walk around the neighborhood.

A nap beside someone you love.

We spend so much of our lives thinking about what's next that sometimes we forget to enjoy what's happening right now.

Your pet lives much closer to that moment.

Maybe we can join them there sometimes.

Your Self-Care Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

You don't need a complicated routine.

You don't need expensive products.

You don't need hours of free time.

And you don't have to make every moment productive.

Self-care can be ten quiet minutes on the couch with your cat.

It can be a slow walk with your dog.

It can be brushing your pet while listening to your favorite music.

It can be watching television together.

It can be laughing at something ridiculous your pet just did.

Or it can simply be sitting beside them and taking a breath.

Sometimes relaxation is less about what we're doing and more about giving ourselves permission to pause.

And if your favorite furry companion happens to be beside you during that pause?

Even better.

A Cozy Paws & Tails Reminder

Your pets need care, attention, enrichment, and love.

But you need care, too.

So don't feel guilty about taking a break.

Invite your pet into the moment when it works for both of you.

Cuddle them.

Play with them.

Walk with them.

Rest beside them.

Or simply enjoy having them nearby.

Because sometimes self-care isn't about getting away from the world.

Sometimes it's about getting comfortable at home with the little soul who makes it feel like home.
